CORD:USE

Founded in 2004, Cord:Use offered both public and private banking for expectant families. The company’s research partner was Duke University Medical Center, which used donated stem cells to test new methods of treatment.

In 2018, Cord:Use was acquired by Cryo-Cell International. Cryo-Cell International has maintained Cord:Use’s public banking service and its close relationship with Duke University Medical Center.

Fast Facts

  • Cord:Use’s collection facility was located in Orlando, Florida
  • Cord:Use had more than 100 years of collective experience with cord blood stem cells
  • Since the bank functioned as a private and public bank, they followed public guidelines for cord blood collection and storage procedures. These guidelines are more strict than if the bank were an entirely private facility.
  • Cord:Use was registered with the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and accredited by AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) and FACT (Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy)

Collection, Transport, and Storage

Cord:Use used an FDA-approved collection bag, made by Pall. The bag was completely sterile on both the inside and outside. Cord:Use used a disinfectant, made by ChloraPrep, for umbilical cord cleaning before the stem cells were collected.

The transportation process also included a liquid citrate anticoagulant, recommended by the FDA, to protect the umbilical cord as it traveled to Orlando. The shipping container was insulated and made exclusively for Cord:Use. Containers were made to maintain temperature for more than 24 hours.

Once at the facility, the umbilical cord was put through an automated cryo-storage procedure, called BioArchive, also used by other world-leading cord blood banks. The storage facility is entirely automated, which keeps freezers closed, and stem cells secure, until they are needed by the donor family.
